I'm sure it would have been easy for Watabou to implement "Pay $1 to save your run," since I first got this game when Temple Run was popular. About as far away from focus tested, generic AAA games as you can get. A turn based pixel-based dungeon crawler game. While I understand that this is far and away the exception, Pixel Dungeon and it derivatives are games that are so full of content and updates that I wouldn't have minded paying $20 for the up front, hell maybe even $60 if I had known how much time I would get out of them (at least 600 hours over the last 5 years, and that's lowballing it). I even programmed my own mod for a couple of months before abandoning it because I'm trash. Additionally, because the game is open source, it's become a trend to mod the game, with popular ones such as Shattered Pixel Dungeon and Sprouted Pixel Dungeon leading the way as far as my all time favorites. Self-published by Russian developer Watabou as a tribute to old Roguelikes, I've sunk more time than is healthy into this game. There is a reason that whenever someone makes an AskReddit thread about "the best mobile apps", this game is always up there. The one example of mobile gaming that still gives me hope is Pixel Dungeon (though it costs a buck on the IOS store) (plug for /r/pixeldungeon) (shilling follows). (Warning: Pixel Dungeon circlejerking below) Games have gotten so disgusting with what they pull. I've been circlejerking about the sorry state of mobile gaming for a while for this same reason.
